'Round the Horn
Stranded in a stormy sea,
Fighting gale and tempest,
Furling sail and “hard to lee”
‘Ere crashing waves o’ertake us.
Not a fortnight since did our
Captain lose his senses;
Forth into the ocean bore,
To risk our lives; so witless.
Now we struggle ‘gainst the tide,
Losing sail and rigging;
Soon we’ll heed, with swiftest strides,
Old Davy Jones’ bidding.
Fight we on, lest chance may slip
To live through such a tempest;
Watch we keenly o’er the ship,
For sunlight through the sea mist.

ReplyDeleteA thrilling account indeed. Governor William Bradford described his relief after the Mayflower landed, "Being thus arrived in a good harbor and brought safe to land, they fell upon their knees & blessed the God of heaven, who had brought them over the vast & furious ocean, and delivered them from all the perils & miseries thereof, again to set their feet on the firm and stable earth, their proper element." I am grateful to be a landlubber! :-)
