The Meeting of the Sun and Moon

“Hail, o Sun!”, cries forth the Moon,

On his circuit passing near;

“Long tis been since last high noon

Shaded was, though clear!”

“Hark! is that my brother there,

Calling forth in midday fair?

Whence do you in daylight stir

When midnight is your lair?”

“Come I forth, fair sister Sun

On my path ordain-ed so;

I have longed to see thee run

Thy course as day goes.”

Sun and Moon in heaven’s height

Thus converse, as men below

Marvel at the stunning sight

As the shadows grow.

“Brother Moon, look down upon

The Earth; your shadow great

Marks a path of dimness; go,

And swift be on your way!”

“Alas, fair Sun, tis but too true,

Our speech must now adjourn;

Go now, and with your heat imbue

The Earth, as slow it turns.”

“Farewell, my brother; set thy road

And light the mortals’ tread at night.

I’ll see thee soon, now swiftly go,

‘Ere Earth take graven fright!”
