The Downfallen

Beneath the waves of ocean cold,

Where none dare go but bravest bold,

Lies an ancient kingdom vast

Which legend made in ages past,

‘Ere sank she down in darkness great

And met her cataclysmic fate.

Once, she rose above the waves,

An empire glorious; light of day

Illumined bright her golden halls

And shone upon the city walls,

Wherein her people happy stayed,

And built their lives in heaven’s rays.

But such an happiness was dimmed

By lust of rulers for an end

Which not their own was set to be;

They sought their immortality,

Which ate away upon their hearts,

And turned them soon to darkest arts.

So fires burned in cities fair,

As lives were lost to evil’s snare,

And faithful ones were cast away

To mourn their dead at break of day,

And wait, and yearn; for light ‘ere long

Cannot abide the darkness strong.

And so, the land fell into night;

The gods afar sent forth their might

And drowned the rebel land beneath

The trackless chasms of the sea;

For fates are laid since dawn of stars

To wiser ends than mortals mark.

But yet, amid the chasms great

And floods that sealed the kingdom’s fate,

A sapling young, and strong of heart,

Was planted at the edge of dark,

To one day grow, and standard be

To rally thence a people free.

So hope abides, ‘mid gravest fate,

And sleeps where few may mark its way,

To rise in hearts, and minds, and souls,

To heal the wounds of direst blow;

How then, shall darkness take away

The brightest light of fair noonday?
